As I'll always fondly remember Elisabeth Sladen, as Sarah Jane Smith in the 1976 Classic Era of DOCTOR WHO. Image: ARGO RECORDS/BBC |
On the eve of what will no doubt be a triumphant return for Matt Smith in his second season of DOCTOR WHO starting this weekend, comes the very sad, very tragic news from last night that the Classic Series most popular actress, the lovely Elisabeth Sladen, who played fellow traveller to Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker's Time Lord incarnations, fearless and spirited investigative reporter Sarah Jane Smith, has died of cancer. This is a great blow to WHO fans worldwide, as well as a new generation of younger fans today watching her adventures on CBBC with THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES series (of which a fifth year was part filmed before her passing). I had the good fortune to meet Miss Sladen twice-once in the early nineties, the other just before she resumed her role opposite David Tennant's Doctor in the 2006 episode SCHOOL REUNION, and I, like many others, will always remember her for her kindness, generosity and life-affirming spirit. To her millions of devoted fans, she will be both long celebrated and remain the ultimate DOCTOR WHO companion who will never be bettered.
Goodbye Elisabeth...
Elisabeth's return as Sarah, opposite robot pooch, K-9, in 2006 was a big hit with audiences. It was great to have her back in the series. |
