DARK FRONTIER: THE RETURN OF 'SPACE: 1999'

Will the Eagles of SPACE: 1999's Moonbase Alpha take flight once more? Image: ITV.

You couldn't get a more intriguing and spectacular science fiction TV series format than having our Moon literally blasted out of Earth's orbit and hurled into the vast and unexplored depths of outer spaces, as it's human inhabitants fight for survival in their search for a new home in which to call their own. Yep, SPACE: 1999 had it all-especially big flares and spectacular special effects!- way back in its two year British run from 1975 to 1977, of which its long term potential for a series could, and should, have gone beyond its original 48 episodes, especially after the arrival of the genre game-changing success of STAR WARS. Now, the makers behind the recent popular re-imagining of Kenneth Johnson's equally memorable eighties sci-fi hit "V" plan a similar treatment on the brave crew of Moonbase Alpha, as the Gerry and Sylvia Anderson created series goes from SPACE: 1999 to 'SPACE: 2099'!

Early details on the shows resurrection, being worked out alongside the UK's ITV STUDIOs, and presumably with Gerry Anderson's cautious embryonic blessing, are vague, but Jace Hall, President of HDFILMS, says that many key and cool ingredients that made the original show, starring Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, such a cult hit will remain, alongside new ideas and concepts that will hopefully bring in modern day audiences used to the kind of gritty realism and conceptual storytelling currently seen in the likes of the equally re-imagined BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

The series original stars: Barbara Bain and Martin Landau pose for an early publicity image.

If things pan out, the next year or so could be a very enjoyable and defining time for Gerry Anderson fans around the world, especially if the planned UFO movie and the creator's own CGI THUNDERBIRDS TV series eventually materialise alongside it.
