A PROPERTY TO DIE FOR! '666 PARK AVENUE'

I think that scientist have been lying to us. I think that the first human clone has been achieved and it's Terry O'Quinn! He just seems to be everywhere these days, and in all the top US TV shows, from HAWAII FIVE-O to FALLING SKIES. But, the good thing is that O'Quinn is also a terrific character actor and his performances in these shows, and past classics like MILLENNIUM and LOST, have always helped to elevate the quality level, something which I hope he, along with lovely co-star Vanessa Williams (playing his glamorous on-screen wife), will bring to the DEVIL'S ADVOCATE inspired television remake, with probably a lot of glossy, soapy DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES incident and beautiful people thrown in for good measure: 666 PARK AVENUE, from ABC TV, and coming soon to UK TV. Carrying on the dark and naughty tradition established by Al Pacino as the Devil, or someone/something very near him/it, is always going to be a hard act to follow, but O'Quinn, as super smart and immensely wealthy businessman Gavin Doran, can do mercurial evil very nicely-remember his final seasons turn as the Smoke Monster/the alternate John Locke in LOST?

Created by Gabriella Pierce, and from her original popular book, the series involves a young well-to-do pairing (re: annoyingly attractive and body toned than you average normal human beings!)- Rachael Tayor as Jane Van Veen and Dave Annable as Henry Martin- soon discovering things going bump in the night beyond the bedroom, and their noisy and varied residents, when they take managership of a desirable Manhattan apartment building-the Drake- that just might be under the control of a mysterious supernatural force, courtesy of its owners, the Dorans. Bad enough that such on-screen stereotyped rich people can be so influential, evil and cruel, but giving them dark powers, too? Well, that's the end of the world in my book, baby!

Also starring Erik Palladino, Robert Buckley, Samantha Logan, Mercedes Masohn and TV baddie veteran Nick Chinlund, so memorable as death fetishist Donny Pfaster in an early episode of THE X-FILES, expect mild scares, occasional sexiness-the best that you'll get on network TV anyway, political and society in-fighting, and the odd bit of feminine super-bitchiness from the New York elite, alongside no doubt multiple character plot strands that may be the hit-or-miss mark on the shows future beyond seven (so far) episodes. Still, whatever happens, I'll be at least watching the pilot episode to see O'Quinn enjoying himself!

Looking set to combine the claustrophobic edge of your seat drama of CRIMSON TIDE, as well as shades of Nevile Shute's classic Nuclear War novel ON THE BEACH and probably a little bit of LOST's lush island visuals thrown in, the upcoming submersive drama THE LAST RESORT, created by THE SHIELD's Shawn Ryan and Karl Gajdusek, promises much in its premiere series ambitions, starting on the UK's SKY ONE HD channel at the end of the month (30th October).

On the bridge of the Colorado, Robert Patrick and Andre Braugher face a nuclear catastrophe.

Finally getting away from lots of supporting roles on film and TV, though staying within the realm of  normally playing stern or gruff military men or authority figures which I've always known him for, experienced character actor Andre Braugher gets a chance to take series centre lead as Captain Marcus Chaplin, captain of the US nuclear submarine Colorado, who questions a vital order from his superiors to fire nuclear missiles on Pakistan. Its a decisive action against his superiors that soon leads him and his loyal crew into becoming pursued fugitives from their homeland. Arriving and commandeering a NATO listening station far out in an undesignated spot in the Pacific Ocean, the shows conspiracy thriller roots are explored as the crew try to find out what has lead them to this scenario. Other sub-plots and story directions ripe for exploration include the Captain and his command crew overcoming internal dissent, trying to get along with the island's already fractious established natives, and taking on a dangerous drug cartel.

Islanders and command staff mix in the opening episode. But will they get along?

Executive produced and directed by top New Zealand action director, and helmer of two of the best modern James Bond films- GoldenEye and Casino Royale, Martin Campbell will surely add style and gloss to the opening pilot episode, whilst a solid supporting cast includes Bruce Davison, DOLLHOUSE's Dichen Lachman and THE UNIT's always great Robert Patrick. It's been a long time since there's been a series like this on the small screen, surely a bold and expensive gamble by ABC TV, and as a huge fan of the edge of your seat submarine thriller sub genre I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing how this format crossing series will pan out. Currently getting respectable ratings in its US timeslot, lets hope that LAST RESORT gets a chance to show future episodes rise to the surface rather than dive, dive, dive down the Nielsens.

DANGEROUS GAMES! 'SCANDAL' AT 1600

Described in some circles as "the anti WEST WING", Shonda Rhimes, executive producer of the soapy States-side hit medical show GREY'S ANATOMY, brings us SCANDAL, creates a new and apparently gritty drama series for ABC TV that's hopefully far removed from the previous soapy hospital environs of emotional and physical trauma that, whilst still popular, has seemingly passed its genre sell by date. Seemingly re-vitalising the small screen realisation of modern-day political and relationships intrigue set within the upper echelons of power that is the Oval Office, SCANDAL is, by its nature and description, exactly what the series is about, through the eyes and work of a powerful and influential damage control liaison and political fixer, Olivia Pope (played by the lovely actress Kerry Washington, best known for her film work in the likes of recent hits THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, and the two fun MARVEL comic blockbusters about THE FANTASTIC FOUR and the upcoming Quentin Tarantino western epic DJANGO UNCHAINED), apparently based on a real-life member of the George Bush administration, who's smart and savvy enough to know what's right and wrong for the people of America through their POTUS (that's the President, for all of us not in the know with all the behind the scenes lingo!). Having been a former communications director to President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn), Pope and her well chosen and accomplished team of heavy-hitters (described as "Gladiators in suits'!) know how to make the most of, avoid or limit the daily problems and/or complex challenges facing and surrounding their boss and paymaster in his actions as the most powerful and recognised leader of the Western World, knowing when and where best to play to his greatest of strengths and personal charisma in the position. The very fact that she knows him beyond the job and her earlier political position-that she was and may soon continue to be his secret mistress- also puts her in a candid and unique position and perspective in which to influence his life and career, in ways that Martin Sheen never had with Allison Janney!

Washington has the ability to be tough and tender in her new series role, capable of locking horns and verbal interplay with the President's most powerful players inside and out of the Oval Office (including Jeff Perry as the powerful bull-in-a-china shop figure of White House Chief of Staff, Cyrus Beene) and looks set to continue the trend for strong female lead roles in prime time series, what with the recent success of Julianna Margulies in THE GOOD WIFE, Anna Torv in FRINGE, and Maria Bello in the controversial US remake of the hit UK police drama PRIME SUSPECT.

I'd hardly put the aforementioned GREY'S ANATOMY in my definition of KOOL TV, but from this new series trailer, its solid cast (including Guillermo Diaz as Olivia's top investigator, Huck, LOST's Henry Ian Cusick and THE WEST WING's Rob Lowe replacement, Joshua Malina), guest stars like MILLENNIUM's Megan Gallagher and Kate Burton (playing the Vice President), backed up with overall interesting plot synopsis for year one- and a second season on the way- which show a mystery/political thriller emphasis to them in certain developing areas, SCANDAL could be sufficiently intriguing enough for me to sample it when it eventually arrives in Blighty...

KOOL TV BABE OF THE WEEK: 'FRINGE's REBECCA MADER

Her fiery, often shady time-travelling architect character of Charlotte Lewis in the hit adventure/drama LOST may, ultimately, and sadly, have been unintentionally shortchanged in the final year of her two season stint on the series-ultimately due to an already creaking the floorboards major ensemble cast with multiple plot strands to be sorted out by the shows writers as it reached its finale), but that hasn't stopped the spirited and lovely British actress Rebecca Mader making a fine career for herself in American television, with guest star roles in other hit, well-known shows like ALPHAS (playing a deadly assassin with an ability to render herself invisible to the human eye), NO ORDINARY FAMILY, COVERT AFFAIRS and LAW AND ORDER to name but a few. Sci-fans who love the J.J. Abrams stable of sci-fi, including the aforementioned LOST, will be pleased to hear that she'll soon be playing another strong character role in the upcoming fourth season (series?) finale episodes of the mind-bending, mind-busting FRINGE (currently showing in the UK on the SKY ONE HD channel), playing Jessica, a potential new love interest (?) for the amiable scientist/ lead Peter Bishop, as played by Joshua Jackson. Jessica will become involved in the FRINGE division's desperate search for the renegade, parallel world traversing, terrorist super baddie David Robert Jones (as played with a high intelligence, supercilious nature by the excellent Jared Harris). KOOL TV looks forward to seeing Miss Mader in the series and what developments her appearance will bring...

Re-imaginings of dark fairy tales and childhood fantasies are the current order of the day on American TV (whether that's deliberate ingenuity or because Hollywood's literally running out of ideas (once again!) is a decision I leave up to you to ponder) with the recent premieres of ONCE UPON A TIME, from LOST writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (about fairy tales characters living for real in Maine), and now ABC's GRIMM, pictured above, now showing exclusively on the UK's WATCH CHANNEL and charting the adventures of Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), a detective working in modern day Portland, Oregon possessing a rare ability, passed down through his family linage, to uncover the supernatural and take on its many dangerous and ethereal nightmare creatures, inspired from the works of the famous Grimm Fairy Tales.

Mixing the always expected high production values alongside detective drama with monster slaying, and created by Stephen Carpenter alongside THE X-FILES/BUFFY's David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, GRIMM has a strong writing and producing pedigree that includes CSI and HAWAII FIVE-O's Sarah Goldfinger and STAR TREK's Naren Shankar amongst its creative team. Early episodes, despite a mixed critical reception, have improved, and the series could be around a little while longer. Whether it looks set to challenge the popularity of recent genre hits like SUPERNATURAL and SANCTUARY is unknown, though it surely won't be a case of fangs for the memory at least for a season!

SECOND HELPINGS OF "V"

It's an absolute bummer that the re-imagined V series was recently cancelled by the short-sighted network idiots as ABC TV-the show had greatly improved and was finally embracing many of the past elements from the original eighties mini-series, created by Kenneth Johnson, that had made it so recognisable and beloved to viewers. Still, despite the chop, and in celebration of all the hard work by the series cast and crew, who loved working on the show, head over to the UK's SYFY channel this weekend starting at mid-day pm today (Saturday) for a chance to see back-to-back episodes of both seasons in terrific HD. Re- watch and enjoy all the betrayal, murder, action and rodent munching of the glossy alien invasion series- as well as a star-making performance from Morena Baccarin as the evil Anna- all over again!

VILLAINS GALORE! " BATMAN" RETURNS...

With the resumption of classic 1960's BATMAN repeats from today weekdays pm on the UK's ITV 4 channel, I thought that, instead of showcasing all the usual and most well known enemies of the Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder, it might be nice to do a little photo gallery of the lesser known villains instead, particularly those that are coming up in the next batch of adventures.

Prepare for the weird and the wonderful...

Classic horror/dramatic actor Vincent Price added fun and villainy as the crazed intelligence that was Egghead in several memorable adventures.

Best known as Gomez in the delightfully crazy THE ADDAMS FAMILY, John Astin proved an intriguing choice to play The Riddler, but Frank Gorshin still remains the inimitable actor in the role. 

Respected character actor Eli Wallach would use friendly persuasion with the TV producers to get a role in BATMAN, and would become the third actor to play the chilly Mister Freeze.

Victor Buono added comedy flair to his performance as King Tut, an actual modern day Egyptologist who, when knocked accidentally on the head, became a major Gotham City villain.

She'd only be in one story, but British film/TV icon Joan Collins brought some ethereal beauty to The Siren.

And let's not forget the third season debut of the lovely actress/dancer Yvonne Craig, who more than spectacularly filled out her crime fighting costume as the kick-ass but playful Batgirl. Brought in to boost the shows ratings at a critical time, Miss Craig certainly did a fine job and added some fun repartee with the Dynamic Duo.

KOOL TV BABE OF THE WEEK: "V"s LAURA VANDERVOORT

Certainly no stranger to playing distinctive females who've come from another galaxy, first as Superman's cousin, Kara (aka SUPERGIRL), in nearly five seasons of the very popular hit series SMALLVILLE, and now playing Lisa, the reptile in human skin daughter of the evil Anna- overbearing, totally dominant leader of the Visitors and their secret armies in the re-imagined V series, the very pretty young Canadian actress Laura Vandervoort is certainly a bright and shiny star on the literal rise, as she adds another fine and subtle layer of character depth and drama to the popular series, as human emotions begin to take shape within Lisa as her love for sappy human shuttle pilot Tyler Evans continues to develop. No longer the temptress of Season One, under orders from her mother to lure Tyler up to the mothership for a life amongst the V's, Lisa has actually started to love the human male, and, in aiding the Human Fifth Column, ready to do anything to protect him, scared as to what will happen to Tyler now that the final phases of Anna's plan for the subjugation of humanity is nearing completion- of which his unique DNA may soon prove to be one of its vital components biologically. And then theres Lisa's discovery of her Grandmother, Diana (Jane Badler), not dead as she and the rest of the Visitor race had been led to believe by Anna, merely imprisoned by her angry daughter for twenty tears. Discovering  this new member of her "family", Lisa's loyalties and dedication to Anna and the Visitors cause is thrown into even more doubt and emotional flux-whatever actions she now chooses, Lisa has now literally become the ultimate decisive pawn in the game.

In the final three episodes of the series all of these intriguing angles, including her increased and thorny relationship with her mother, so nastily and manipulatively played by Morena Baccarin (and great fun to watch), will soon come to a head in a generally very satisfying way by the shows final episode, which is a real heart-stopper and full of exciting and grossly shocking sequences in its second half.

And we haven't even mentioned the "other" Lisa waiting in the wings....

V's future as a third season is still currently in doubt, though many of the shows cast are hopeful that a final decision in favour of renewal will be made soon by ABC. Let's hope that both Lisa and Laura Vandervoort (currently adding her voice to a talented crew on FAMILY GUY) will continue to play an important role in the series future, too...

To celebrate the recent packed with extras UK release, from REVELATION FILMS, of the first season of the classic Irwin Allen two year running adventure series LAND OF THE GIANTS, which originally premiered on the US ABC TV in September 1968 (and made by 20TH CENTURY FOX), here's a great publicity shot of the actors (with giant hand to boot!) who played the gallant, fighting the odds crew and passengers of the sub-orbital transport vessel Spindrift, whose ship, having encountered a strange phenomenon in space, crash-lands on an alternate Earth-like planet where, with everything five times bigger than anything on their own world, and trying to repair their ship so as to escape, they soon find themselves constantly on the run and on their guard against its inhabitants, who stand tall like a race of giants within their surroundings, and whom show a keenness to capture and experiment on those they regard as "the little people"!

Launching a fascinating new take on the GULLIVER'S TRAVELS concept, the series format ultimately proved too bold in its execution, leading to an unfair demise in early 1970 due to its glossy and ground-breaking high production costs, on a weekly basis, in creating such huge sets, props and the occasional creature for our heroes to struggle against or traverse. LAND OF THE GIANTS would be one of the last and best of the Irwin Allen TV series staples before he moved into the big budget arena of disaster movies film-making like THE TOWERING INFERNO, and, with its originality intact, could quite easily be re-made now as an intriguing cinematic adventure story. This durable series, with a memorable cast (including heroic leads Gary Conway and Don Marshall, the almost anti-hero Kurt Kasznar and babe-tastic Deanna Lund), great guest stars (including Michael Ansara, Jonathan Harris and David Opatoshu), high production values and jazzy and exciting music scores from a pre-STAR WARS John Williams, was a morning/mid-afternoon mainstay treat on the UK's CHANNEL FOUR in the late eighties and early nineties and was very popular with audiences old and new, young and old. It was hoped that, with a renewal of interest in the series in worldwide reruns, that there might be some kind of reunion film with the surviving cast, but alas it was not to be. Still, as an iconic slice of classic and KOOL TV, LAND OF THE GIANTS will continue to endure...

KOOL TV BABE OF THE WEEK: "LOIS & CLARK"s TERI HATCHER

There's an old saying that behind every great (Super)man there's a great woman, and, in this case, she’s in the shapely form of the feisty and determined news reporter Lois Lane, who truly put the “women” into women’s lib and has emerged as a true and enduring heroine of the comic book universe over the last eighty years-and she still doesn’t look a day over 30 in her sassy comic strip realization!

She may not have had super powers to match the Man of Steel whom she loves and admires, but instead possesses equal might with her penmanship skills and the strength of the written word as she equally fights in her own unique way for truth, justice and the American way, defending the underdog, and often going where angels fear to tread in exposing corruption and fighting evil, as well as getting a good Pulitzer prize winning story to further her career. Yes, she’s very ambitious but there is a warmer side to her motives, and she’s always offering invaluable (if slightly biting), as well as not so invaluable, advice and opinions to friends and acquaintances both personally and professionally as one of the top investigative journalists of the Metropolis city’s ever enduring THE DAILY PLANET newspaper, of which, amongst her colleagues, just happens to be the Red Caped crusader himself in his meek and mild mannered disguise as reporter and super-fast typist, Clark Kent.

Times may change, civilizations and empires may rise and fall, people may come and go, and life goes through good to bad and back again, but Superman’s one and only love for Lois Lane, and vice versa, remains one of the greatest and long lasting iconic romances in American and comics history, and has proved ripe for exploration, both dramatically and for comedic effects, in numerous film and TV adaptations of the SUPERMAN series, first created by the brilliant pairing of Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster all those year ago, with numerous actress bringing their own unique abilities and interpretations to the role, including Noel Neill who played Lois in the early Kirk Alyn and George Reeves serials and series of the forties and fifties (and who would make very memorable cameo appearances in two future SUPERMAN movies), the great Margot Kidder who, in tremendous chemistry with the late, much missed Christopher Reeve, bought a sometimes dipsy, whimsical, slightly modernistic edginess to the role, alongside warm-heartedness and heroism, and, into the 2000’s, young firebrands like Kate Bosworth and Erica Durance, whose revisionist portrayals with small and large screen ventures in SUPERMAN RETURNS and the ever popular, ten season long running series SMALLVILLE, about the life of young Clark Kent, continue to resonate and prove popular with today’s sophisticated audiences.

But it was after the phenomenon of the four SUPERMAN films (1978 to 1987), and a short lived but popular SUPERBOY series, that our hero and his loyal friends got a second rush of popularity and success with the Man of Steel’s origins re-imagined and re-cast for younger audiences with ABC TV’s LOIS & CLARK: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN. Here, Dean Cain broke through to star status as the Man of Steel and, though his Earth saving efforts were a bit on the small scale side special effects-wise (due to the confines of a weekly TV production budget), loyal viewers enjoyed his exploits but particularly his scenes as a more modern, less weedy Clark Kent and his will they/won’t they banter with the new actress cast as Lois Lane: another relative unknown, who’d previously had bit parts in films like actioner TANGO AND CASH and TV with STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, a great looking lady who more than looked the part as realized in the comic strips of the time and who proved a fine casting choice, quickly following Cain to star status: Teri Hatcher. Like the ladies who trod the stilettoed path before her, she, too, made the part her own, adding a dash of vulnerable humour but also steely determination, plus the required knack for getting herself into trouble and needing Superman’s help, as the pair created a popular, always developing chemistry to the series, taking on all manner of weird and wonderful baddies, which would last four popular years worldwide and help to solidify the success of the SUPERMAN legend further as an entertainment medium for the next two decades…

Beyond the career mapping LOIS AND CLARK, Hatcher’s acting work in the last fifteen years or so has continued ever successfully, including a memorable guest appearance as a doomed James Bond girl, Paris Carver, in the hit Pierce Brosnan 007 actioner TOMORROW NEVER DIES, and as the dizzy, well intentioned but everything seems to go wrong for her Susan Mayer, one of the popular DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, adding her acting charms and mum next door sexiness to another worldwide TV smash which seemingly has no end in sight.

As the tough but challenging search begins anew for another fine actress to inherit the persona of Lois Lane in starring opposite Brit actor Henry Clavell (best known for his work on THE TUDORS) as Superman, part of Zack Snyder’s new re-imagining of the saga of the adopted child of the late planet Krypton (which may also star such popular stars as Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as his adopted parents, the Kent’s), we wish whoever is selected the very best of luck in playing what remains a great and iconic role, as well as recognizing and saluting all the great actresses who have played Lois in the past.

And, if you’re in the journalist profession, always remember Lois’s advice: “A good reporter doesn’t get great stories. A good reporter makes them great!”

Great news for UK V fans as the word is in that the SYFY channel (and HD) will be showing the second season of the re-imagined series, made in the US by ABC TV, every Thursday from March 24th onwards at 9pm. Fans old and new will enjoy this new season-a great improvement over its premiere year, which features not only Jane Badler from the original series but also, in its season finale, the welcome return of Marc Singer, playing a mysterious new character, and resistance fighter, Lars Tremont (pictured below).
