KOOL TV BABE OF THE WEEK: 'FRINGE's REBECCA MADER

The lovely British actress Rebecca Mader, as seen in the 2011 comedy series WORK IT. Image: ABC TV.

Her fiery, often shady time-travelling architect character of Charlotte Lewis in the hit adventure/drama LOST may, ultimately, and sadly, have been unintentionally shortchanged in the final year of her two season stint on the series-ultimately due to an already creaking the floorboards major ensemble cast with multiple plot strands to be sorted out by the shows writers as it reached its finale), but that hasn't stopped the spirited and lovely British actress Rebecca Mader making a fine career for herself in American television, with guest star roles in other hit, well-known shows like ALPHAS (playing a deadly assassin with an ability to render herself invisible to the human eye), NO ORDINARY FAMILY, COVERT AFFAIRS and LAW AND ORDER to name but a few. Sci-fans who love the J.J. Abrams stable of sci-fi, including the aforementioned LOST, will be pleased to hear that she'll soon be playing another strong character role in the upcoming fourth season (series?) finale episodes of the mind-bending, mind-busting FRINGE (currently showing in the UK on the SKY ONE HD channel), playing Jessica, a potential new love interest (?) for the amiable scientist/ lead Peter Bishop, as played by Joshua Jackson. Jessica will become involved in the FRINGE division's desperate search for the renegade, parallel world traversing, terrorist super baddie David Robert Jones (as played with a high intelligence, supercilious nature by the excellent Jared Harris). KOOL TV looks forward to seeing Miss Mader in the series and what developments her appearance will bring...

THE HUMAN CONNECTION. 'TOUCH' ARRIVES IN THE UK.

Paths of life and incident. Kiefer Sutherland unravels the strands in TOUCH. Images: FOX

Not long to go now until the UK series debut of the new Tim Kring created, Kiefer Sutherland starring family drama with a mystery twist- TOUCH- arriving in a positive blaze of publicity on the SKY ONE HD channel from 13th March at 8pm. We've seen the first episode and it was very enjoyable-much better than we anticipated, too, of which hope the series long-term can live up to its format promise. It's a well made piece of modern television and great to see Sutherland in a less dominant role, away from 24's Jack Bauer.

Just from the opener alone, it has charming touches of the old HEROES season one magic of solid characters and a world encompassing dynamic, so I'm hopeful...

BATTLE LINES IN THE SAND: "HAWAII FIVE-O" SEASON TWO CONTINUES...

Our men from Hawaii in trouble in North Korea, during the HAWAII FIVE-O episode Ki'ilua. Images: CBS.

UK fans of the adventures of Steve McGarrett (the sturdy and dependable action hero as played by Alex O'Loughlin) and his HAWAII FIVE-O team, now reaching the mid-point of its second season on SKY ONE HD, have some shocks and surprises in store for them with the return of their dreaded nemesis Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos). Having previously fled Hawaii, the crime-lord businessman with long-stretched hands reaching out into the heart of the island paradise's underworld, is determined to wreak revenge, with Steve at the top of his payback list as he activates a deadly plot in the North Korea set action fest that is episode ten: Ki'ilua. And as the plot thickens, just who or what is the mysterious Shearbourne? And how is it all linked to the McGarrett family, and Steve's relationship with his army mentor, Joe White (Terry O'Quinn)? Is Joe helping or hindering Steve in his search for the truth? All will be revealed in a most anticipated way as we head towards the explosive season finale.

A shock for Steve (Alex O' Loughlin) in the upcoming episode Mai Ka Wa Kahiko.
Can Steve still trust his old friend, Joe (Terry O'Quinn)?
Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) gets hitched in Alaheo Pau'ole. Aw, bless...

Alongside all that, other singular episode tales in this confident and fast paced new year, now with its own identity away from the original Leonard Freeman created series, include a hostage situation involving drug dealers kidnapping a school bus packed with children, a deadly con artist who preys on the family of a missing son, and the emergence of a dirty cop from Danno's past. On the lighter side of things, Danno, well played as ever by Scott Caan (his "bromance" with Steve one of the series highlights), also gets the chance to be a mid-wife, and there's the charming wedding of Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) to the lovely Malia (Reiko Aylesworth), too. Plus, future top name guest stars including the return of Tom Sizemore as Captain Vincent Fryer, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Yakuza boss Hiro Nashimori, alongside THE EVENT's Ian Anthony Dale as his son, Adam, whilst newcomers awaiting their flower necklaces include actor/comedian Dennis Miller, NYPD BLUE's Gail O'Grady and Scott Caan's legendary father, James, filming sometime in February- definitely an episode to look forward to. TIMESCAPE! 'FRINGE' SEASON FOUR RESUMES...

Time is relative! The cast of FRINGE return. Images: FOX/WARNER BROTHERS.

That intriguing and intoxicating mixture of character drama and alternate universes sci-fi thrills FRINGE, co-created by wunderkid J.J. Abrams, resumes its fourth season on SKY ONE HD in the UK next Wednesday, and its seemed like ages since timeslipped, no longer in non-existence Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), madcap scientist daddy Walter (John Noble) and spunky FBI heroine Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) were last on our screens. And die-hard fans watch out, this new batch looks likely to pummel our heroes emotionally once again. If you think Peter had a bad time of it recently, and almost giving Walter a self induced lobotomy in the process, wait and see what the series writers and producers have planned for poor Olivia this year. There's also the return of those pesky and highly dangerous Shapeshifters in their new combustible configurations, plus a welcome Season One enemy back to frustrate and bewilder: MAD MEN and SHERLOCK HOLMES Professor Moriarty, the always reliable Brit star Jared Harris as the time war waging David Robert Jones, possibly alongside 24's first Bauer baddie Michael Massee. And, in counter-balance, let's not forget our always party crashing friends who transform chaos into order (and get it right most of the time): the baldy men known as The Observers. Plus, the lovely and cute Astrid (Jasika Nicole) finally gets a chance to shine in her own story alongside all the other multiple versions of our series main characters, too - who says TV series writers can't have fun!-like the black gloved scientist Nina Sharp (Blair Brown), finally getting more evil, and some fun chin-wagging rivalry between Peter and his FRINGE division 'replacement', Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel).

Here's a few images from upcoming episodes (make the most of these new stories as a fifth season for FRINGE has not yet been guaranteed by its makers FOX, so there is the possibility that this may be our final run (sniff..)), in a half season of complex and absorbing adventures which include a time-trapped town you can't escape from (GROUNDHOG DAY times a thousand!), the search for a killer who uses a toxin not yet created on Earth, and an on-the-run mental patient with important links to Olivia's past....

Trouble for Agent Broyles (Lance Reddick), Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Lincoln (Seth Gabel) in the episode Enemy of My Enemy.
Peter mixes with his alternate universe friends in Enemy of My Enemy.
Olivia (Anna Torv) and Lincoln receive some important news in Back to Where You've Never Been.
Walter (John Noble) shares his thoughts with Peter and a girl with psychic powers in an upcoming episode.
Olivia's on the case in the episode Forced Perspective.
Jared Harris makes a welcome return as evil-doer David Robert Jones.

COSTA DEL NIGHTMARE! "MAD DOGS" SERIES TWO

Head-ing for trouble, those MAD DOGS (left to right: Max Beesley, Philip Glenister, John Simm and Marc Warren) are probably wishing they'd gone to Florida! It's time for Season Two of MAD DOGS. Image: LEFT BANK PICTURES.

Literally in it up to their necks in bovver, those four mid-life crisis friends (Woody (Max Beesley), Rick (Marc Warren), Baxter (John Simm) and Quinn (Philip Glenister)) continue having the worst time you could ever experience on a holiday island, returning for the second series of SKY ONE HD's inventive and high quality black comedy/drama series MAD DOGS (from next Thursday 19th). And things looked particularly bleak last year for Quinn, who, having shot the crooked police woman Maria (Maria Botto), valiantly decided to sacrifice himself to the looming presence of Spanish hitman Dominic (Tim Woodward) so as to let his three friends escape to Ibiza-and even further away if possible!- from the trouble they had accidentally, and foolhardily, got themselves ensconced in during the four terrifically enjoyable and surreal episodes of Season One, which quickly went on to garner strong ratings and very loyal audience appreciation.

With the aforementioned Quinn's fate having looked decidedly sealed, this new season literally picks up mere minutes after that inventively shot and acted closing scene, going into a new scenario described by the cast as "a bit of a road movie" that looks set to multiple everything bad by a factor of twenty, and within a bold and even more ambitious storyline which the shows producers promise is more explosive and inventive than what had been seen previously in Season One, introducing a plot that brings more death and rigor mortis (of which Rick had prior become an expert in the field!), that 3 million euros of drug money, an exploding caravan, and a strange and surely to be iconic new character called "Wheezy"- described in the press as an "obsessive, oxygen tank carrying OAP." It'll be interesting to see if this new character creation can possibly top the deadly and highly memorable antics of actor Tomas Pozzi, seen last year as the brilliant little "Tony Blair" killer!

Once more written by creator Cris Cole, and now directed by James Hawes, best known for his inventive work on the BBC's DOCTOR WHO and MERLIN, here's the current trailer for the series, with added goats and religious iconography no less: 'Mad Dogs': Series 2 teaser trailer

THE BIG WAVE AHEAD FOR "HAWAII FIVE-O" SEASON TWO

No time for fun and the sun with the more sombre team of HAWAII FIVE-O Season Two. Images: CBS/PARAMOUNT.

At the end of the last premiere season, things weren't looking too good for our modern HAWAII FIVE-O team: Steve McGarrett was framed by his regular nemesis Wo Fat for the murder of Governor Jameson, and duly arrested, Danny "Danno" Williams pregnant ex-wife and their daughter had left the country, Chin Ho was back in the regular police and his cousin Kono was also behind bars after having been identified by a Granny at the previous crime scene where the elite squad had been forced to steal money to pay a previous ransom on Chin Ho's life. So, yep, it was doom and gloom all round!

As the new season picks up, coming to the UK on SKY ONE HD in January 2012, Steve, now locked up in his best orange prison fatigues, faces off against against another old enemy- the bloodthirsty Victor Hesse (James Marsters)- whilst his friends pick up the pieces and try to rescue their ex-boss. The Season opener Ha'i'ole is a very good, fast paced start for fans as well as a warm re-introduction to the series, even more glossy and fast paced than before, and promising some different story and character dynamics to come for at least the first half of the year, so be prepared: shocks and surprises await, with one of the latter moments being the welcome return to television of Terry O'Quinn (previously Locke- one of the principal heroes, and villains, of LOST), playing Navy SEALS instructor and ex-mentor to McGarrett, Lt. Commander Joe White, now back in Hawaii to help Danny and Chin Ho get the dismantled squad back on its feet and discover the complex truth of all things relating to Wo Fat (always well played by Mark Dacascos). There will also be a brand new member of the team in the shape of Homeland Security Special Agent Lori Weston, played by Lauren German, the return of Chin Ho's love interest Malia (as played by 24's Reiko Aylesworth), whilst Season One's occasional role for ex-HEROES Masi Oka, as obsessive compulsive brainiac Dr. Max Bergman, goes full time series regular (and as part of the cast title sequence, too!).

Beyond all that, future series episodes include the hunt for a kidnapped 15 year old girl, a battle with a killer taking out members of a Navy SEALS team, a mystery linked to the death of a salvage diver/treasure hunter, and the ongoing storyline linked to McGarrett's deceased father, John (Bill Sadler), intriguingly develops ever further. Guest casts for the new season include TV/film veterans Tom Sizemore and Don Stroud.

FAMILY VALUES TIMES FIVE HUNDRED: "THE SIMPSONS" STYLE!

America's favourite family are back: THE SIMPSONS. Image: copyright MATT GROENING/ TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

The series that helped define American comedy, pioneered small screen animation, launched the careers of a generation of satirists, and would continue to help shore up the US FOX network and the UK's SKY channels over twenty three years, THE SIMPSONS, created by Matt Groening, remains as iconic, beloved and enjoyable as ever. Okay, so the series definitive run of true comic genius was a while back, but its still very funny as it approaches its landmark 500th episode. Homer, in particular, remains the most satisfyingly consistent, worst kind of role model to resonate with fans of all ages, alongside his always looking on the bright side super-wife/mum, Marge, let Mister Burns further sustain his evil empire, and long may Bart stay the youthful joke cracking, prank making smart-ass. Meanwhile, the continued episodic guest stars appearances (this year from the likes of Lady Gaga, Bryan Cranston, Andy Garcia, Joan Rivers, Gordon Ramsay and a returning Kiefer Sutherland) are now almost symbiotically part and parcel of the series tapestry/success. It seems their "I'm doing this for my children" explanation never goes out of fashion, nor does the show in general for the millions of audiences worldwide still happily watching the twisted but always amiable life and chaos unfolding in Springfield!

DOOMSDAY MINUS ONE: THE RETURN OF "FRINGE"!

Caught in the paradoxes of existence- the cast of FRINGE. Image: FOX.

Has Peter Bishop truly been wiped out from Human existence?

That's the frightening and intriguing question to be answered across the storytelling platform of the entire new fourth season of the cult hit FOX sci-fi series FRINGE, which returns this week to sophisticatedly baffle and entertain audiences on SKY ONE HD a mere few days after its US premiere last weekend. And its not just the fact that he's physically gone from time and space, but its all the ramifications that go with his disappearance, too, meaning that anyone who ever met, knew, or loved him-like scientist father Walter (as ever brilliantly played by John Noble, his character the catalyst for al the problems affecting the Earth and its opposite, parallel universe from the start) and FBI agent Olivia Dunham (the lovely Anna Torv), his FBI FRINGE Division partner in investigation and former lover (and whose opposite, known as "Fauxlivia", was also pregnant with his child)- within this newly created third alternate Earth, brought into reality by Peter from the near destruction of the two universes-have now completely forgotten him as well!

With three previous seasons of mind-boggling but inventive and epic storytelling- a realm of balance and imbalance-its going to be very interesting to see just how much further they can go with the series and its format without further bewildering and confusing casual viewers any further-we're now past the point, like the later seasons of LOST, where I feel the show will be able to bring in new viewers. Following on from the loss of Peter and this newly created Earth, however, the series producers have promised a jaw dropping series to come, full of inventive and unusual twists, shocks, surprises and revelations galore, which many of the main cast consider to be like a glorious series reset button for the shows existing format (though the two parallel universe alternates will also continue to inter-act with one another, as seen in last season's finale). Certainly, Peter's absence will see expanded roles for other series supporting cast members like the sweet Jasika Nicole as Walter's science aide, Astrid, as well as the re-introduction of Seth Gabel as a series regular, once again playing Lincoln Lee, who is now Olivia's investigator partner, Lincoln Lee, in the new universe. Also returning to the series will be the intriguing baldy men characters called The Observers (often played by Michael Cerveris, Peter Woodward and Eugene Lipinsky), gifted with the ability to see the past, present and future timelines of the universe, and William Sadler as Dr. Bruce Sumner. They'll also be a new recurring character, not yet revealed, played by DIRTY SEXY MONEY actress Michelle Krusiec...

As to the man who brought Peter Bishop to on screen life, actor Joshua Jackson has confirmed that somehow, somewhere, his character will indeed return, but how and when, plus the ramifications from his re-appearance and why this has all happened, have yet to be determined. The storytelling cards may be up in the air once more, and nothing and no one may seem what they appear in the somewhat slow building opening instalments, but one thing's for sure: the series devoted fanbase can't wait to see what happens next...

Seasons One to Three of FRINGE are now available on DVD and Blu-ray from WARNER HOME VIDEO. Joshua Jackson has also recently contributed an exclusive story to the DC comic book of the series. See the details here: Joshua Jackson to write Peter's lost stories in Fringe comics | Blastr

FIRST LOOK: STEVEN SPIELBERG'S "TERRA NOVA"

A new dawn beckons for the cast of Steven Spielberg's big budget Human/dinosaur drama: TERRA NOVA. Images: FOX
Steven Spielberg's enthusiastic, almost carnivorous (excuse the pun!) obsession with dinosaurs continues long past the mega-success of his world popular JURASSIC PARK film series, as he brings the amazing creatures that once mightily walked the Earth to the scale of the small screen, but with a new high concept sci-fi twist in the epic upcoming TV series TERRA NOVA, where humans from a dying Earth of the year 2149 travel back through a specifically created time portal to a purer living prehistoric past, so as to begin life anew.

AVATAR"s great character actor/star Stephen Lang plays Human Colony Leader Nathaniel Taylor.
Made entirely within the stunning exterior climes of sunny Australia in a production deal with the FOX channel-who have boldly ordered thirteen episodes right from the off-set, the series looks set to have the same kind of filmic, high production standards of JURASSIC met with the kind of futuristic look and technology seen in other previous hits like James Cameron's AVATAR, and especially with regards to that films stunning and evocative creation of a unique and beautiful realm. The series also shares one of AVATAR's popular main stars, Stephen Lang, though fortunately this time he won't be playing a ferocious, revenge fuelled baddie; instead he's Commander Nathaniel Taylor, a true pioneer and leader of the human settlement. Fighting what will surly be the charismatic star power of the dinosaurs themselves, the series other main leads include lead Jason O'Mara, from the US version of the acclaimed time travel/mystery/fantasy series LIFE ON MARS, playing scientist Jim Shannon, a man with an apparently complicated past, whose newly arrived family are at the core of the evolving (hopefully involving) drama, along with up and coming British actress Shelly Conn as his wife, Elizabeth, and another Brit, Christine Adams, playing Mira, the leader of a rival Human group that opposes the leadership of Taylor.

Trailer: TERRA NOVA - First Look Trailer‬‏ - YouTube

Three great teaser posters for the series from FOX.
With a behind the scenes team that includes 24's David Fury and Jon Cassar, as well as 24/THRESHOLD/STAR TREK's bold and controversial ideas man Brannon Braga, and with a series opener directed by the reliable FRINGE/ THE WEST WING veteran Alex Graves, let's hope that the series (which debuts in September in the US on FOX and on SKY ONE HD in the UK), which looks set to add a little bit of LOST, OUTCASTS and PRIMEVAL into the mix as well, doesn't have the kind of cutesy educational tone that marred a lot of the first series of Spielberg's earlier high production values underwater series SEAQUEST DSV (starring the late Roy Scheider) and that we get some serious, possibly thought-provoking and clever storytelling amidst some great mega action from lots of hopefully rampaging dinosaurs!

Look out for more on TERRA NOVA on KOOL TV soon...

KOOL TV REVIEW: "MAD DOGS"

It's no summer holiday for the unfortunate Brits of MAD DOGS. Image: SKY TV
Brilliantly blurring the lines between black comedy and crime drama, with a touch of the surreal, and a dash of eighties pop video style decadence thrown in for good measure, MAD DOGS proved to be one of the best things to have come out of SKY ONE’s continuing drama output in a long time, mainly due to a fine script written and produced by Chris Cole, great direction from Adrian Shergold and, of course, the four terrific British actors who played our over the hill, up the creek, blackmailed, framed and victimized, and highly unlikely, heroes caught up in a nightmare scenario that quickly gets above all of their heads and is totally out of control by the end of the first episode and threatens to tear their friendships apart. Yes indeed, all four leads were well showcased, and this was one of the best projects Max Beesley- playing the dependable if a little thick ex-drinker, with a sad secret, Woody- has been involved in for a long time, but I think Marc Warren, as the often stupid but cockily charming Rick (who mined some great comedy gold in places, like when he was trying to saw off his late friends hands and feet so as to hide his body in the freezer!) and John Simm, wearing his broken glasses in a style reminiscent of Dustin Hoffman in STRAW DOGS, playing failed ex-banker Baxter with the kind of intensity and breaking madness only he could uniquely brings to his role, between a range of sympathetic victim and head-case to be, were the stand-outs, though Philip Glenister, who played against his more recent Gene Hunt hard man type figure as Quinn, a thinking he’s past it at 41 type figure, embittered with life and lonely after separating from his wife and family, got the last word visually with the story’s memorable finale scene at the swimming pool and the approaching hit man!
Friends re-united. Ben Chaplin as ex-pat Spanish businessman,  Alvo.
Skillfully navigating comedy, violence and bleak horror is not easy in modern TV, but MAD DOGS made it look so. The overall way that the series main characters, at first stereotypes, sun burnt and often environment challenged, quickly unpeeled to reveal their faults and insecurities, and secrets with each other, was well handled over the course of the stylish four episodes, and we all knew things were never going to be the same again for the foursome from the moment they discovered a dead mountain goat in their friend Alvo’s swimming pool –a gruesome moment indicating the shocks to come...
A face guaranteed to bring terror to any normal person! The hit-man Tiny Tony (Tomas Pozzi)
Some days you just can't get rid of a body!
Complications arrive with the feminine wiles of Maria Botto as a a dedicated police woman.
Maria Botto waves her badge, but she may not be what she seems...
As anarchy, botched plans, over cooked histrionics and chaos develop, the four friendships come to the point of disintegration and finally crack open in their locked in house claustrophobia by the last stages of the series finale, leading to their leaving the house completely loony-like, their faces made up in the best warrior painted tradition, a la LORD OF THE FLIES meets BUTCH AND SUNDANCE, so as to go down fighting their hidden enemies. It was a brilliant sequence, and pitch perfect acting and direction-wise.
Rick (Marc Warren) gets some revenge on Tiny Tony!
The smaller secondary cast proved equally good and necessary to the tale, especially Maria Botto as Maria, the sexiest Spanish police woman I’ve seen yet, and Tim Woodward, son of the late Edward, as the aforementioned hit-man, plus special singular praise for the littlest star of the show, Tomas Pozzi, playing the frightening gangster in the Tony Blair mask: his scene where he took on Glenister, Simm and Beesley inside the estate, finally felled by a shovel hit from an heroic Warren, and their subsequent trying to lock him up in a cupboard, was one of the funniest sequences I’d seen on television in ages. And we mustn’t also forget Ben Chaplin, who certainly made his mark in the series opener as the foursomes loathing and duplicitous self-made millionaire friend and holiday invitee Alvo, whose cocksure Spanish lifestyle, knifing and antagonistic banter/ jibes to his poorer friends leads up to his all-important death in front of them, at the hands of the Mob!

Not your average holiday for Messrs Beesley, Warren, Glenister and Simm!
Against all the trust no one complexities, and within this hot and picturesque Spanish locale, where blood and sangria seemed to mix most causally, there was no need to be reminded of the fact that MAD DOGS was indeed another type of SEXY BEAST, one re-imagined for television, as had been hinted at it in the pre-press releases, but done just as well. One of the best definitions of modern drama, MAD DOGS hit the mark as a distinctive, challenging, exciting and funny production, and definitely worthy of being KOOL TV!

KOOL TV RATING: 4 out of 5.

KOOL TV REVIEW: "HAWAII FIVE-O" PILOTS OLD AND NEW

Surf's up! There's a new tide of crime-fighting action in HAWAII FIVE-O. All images: CBS PARAMOUNT
It worked for STAR TREK, but has Producer/writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman pulled off a second miracle with their creative hands turned towards re-imagining the crime thriller drama HAWAII FIVE-O? Well, judging from the opening episodes, I think it’s fair to say they’ve done a good job here, too, with a series that I think will get improve further with subsequent episodes. This new series opener proved a slick, fast paced and exciting production from the get-go, though I think it could have had a slightly longer running time so as to have allowed it to breathe a bit better. With the re-imagined characters of Steve McGarrett (played with strength by Alex O’Loughlin, though sadly he doesn’t yet compete with Jack Lord in the original role: Lord was a true one-off!) and Danny “Danno” Williams (nicely played by Scott Caan-and a true highlight of the series), the producers and writers obviously decided to have the opener start off with the kind of main plot thrust that had made their re-booted STAR TREK film franchise such a success two years ago, by having the two leads acting antagonistically towards each other before settling them down into the heroic buddies they will become over subsequent episodes. The script, from ex-24 staffer Peter M. Lenkov, as well as making a few subtly successful references to the original 1967/68 pilot of the first series, also quickly and interestingly introduced the rest of the supporting squad well, and gave them a potentially great bad guy to fight who will have escaped his watery fate to come back in the future (Victor Hesse, as played by BUFFY’s James Marsters), as well as dangling some unresolved loose ends from the plot that will be sorted out over the next few episodes.

Beyond the great opening titles and the return of the legendary title music by Morton Stevens, film director Len Wiseman gave it all a nice look and pace. On the action side, it was tough and brutal and the final ship cargo container fight had more than a few stylistic nods to the kind of action showed by Daniel Craig as James Bond in the opening sequence in Jamaica for CASINO ROYALE. And on the location side it was nice to see Hawaii being Hawaii for a change rather than substituting itself for other climes and continents as it had done in TV such as LOST and films like JURASSIC PARK, backed up with the kind of glossy cinematography you see these days in CSI: MIAMI that makes travel agents go all funny with pride. Besides the visuals, the new series has even greater potential story-wise in using the island, its important positioning in the world, and its characters than the original did, especially as crime, and its purveyors, are much more inventive and dangerous than ever.

As Steve McGarrett and his new team settle into their new offices, will I be joining them for the rest of their adventures showing on SKY ONE and HD every Sunday? You can bet your Big Kahuna I will!

KOOL TV RATING: Big dumb fun with a lean and mean pilot episode script-wise and visually, which will bring in the new younger fans and also no doubt, with its enthusiastic production team and new cast coming together over the season, eventually winning over the shows original sixties to eighties viewers, too. 3 out of 5

Jack Lord: the original Steve McGarrett!
In celebration of the new HAWAII FIVE-O, I decided it would be nice to go back in time and also watch, in comparison, the original 1968 feature length iconic pilot episode, mysteriously titled COCOON, starring the original team led by McGarrett, as then played by the super-cool Jack Lord, and I have to say that, despite its age, it had worn pretty well indeed. Like the new series opener, it had a good pace about it, a fine central story from the shows late creator, Leonard Freeman, that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a Bond film or early MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. episode (involving the kidnapping and torture of top American Intelligence agents), lots of action against some great Hawaiian locations, and a very centralized dug well into the story lead actor/character showing lots of tough verve and enthusiasm (as well as a nice little side-line in humour) who had lots to do, with support from his team including legendary characters like the more portly early versions of Chin Ho Kelly (Kam Fong), Kono Kalakaua (as played by the mighty Hawaiian actor Zulu), and McGarrett’s chief compatriot, Danny “Book ‘em Danno!” Williams, albeit played by a different actor, Tim O’Kelly, before the iconic James McArthur, alongside stylish direction from regular MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE TV series helmer Paul Wendkos. Later seasons and episodes of the show became a little less high octane plot-wise, but this was certainly a great and memorable start to the series, with a fine guest cast including Frank Drebin-to-be Leslie Nielsen, and Nancy Kwan playing a rare love interest for McGarrett. And, like the new FIVE-O, this show also spawned a regular and memorable series villain. In this case, the bald and nasty Chinese agent Wo Fat (as played by Khigh Dhiegh)

COCOON certainly held its own as the original series launcher, as an American series pilot in general from the sixties and certainly against today’s new HAWAII FIVE-O pilot, too! You could see that it was going to be a memorable hit, and it's well worth checking out if you ever get the chance.

KOOL TV RATING: Jack Lord at the top of his game in a stylish and fast paced series opener. 4 out of 5

MAYHEM IN MAJORCA: "MAD DOGS"!

Off to sunny Spain, and unaware of the nightmare to come, the four stars of MAD DOGS. Images: SKY ONE.
SKY ONE’s continuing flirtation with making and selling its own unique drama programmes has been operating since the late nineties (anybody out there remember THE STRETCH, with EASTENDERS stars Leslie Grantham and Anita Dobson, or the weird and largely unfunny drama/comedy THE STRANGERERS from RED DWARF creators/writer Rob Grant?) and has been strengthened in recent years with their involvement with and adapting of several of fantasy author Terry Pratchett’s DISCWORLD books and, most recently, with flavour of the month actor David Morrissey in his playing Detective Thorne in TV adaptation of the famous books by Mark Billingham. Now from the Isleworth Industrial Estate based company comes what looks set to be a modern iconic new four part drama/thriller, with a mix of black comedy thrown in: MAD DOGS, about a group of guys on a Jolly Boys Outing to Spain which soon becomes the holiday reunion from hell, from a story pitched by several of its stars determined to break through into both realms of the acting and scripted storytelling medium and create more noteworthy TV projects not only for them to work in but for audiences in general whose viewing habit boats, especially in the UK, find themselves sailing within a current sea of largely dross modern drama...

Much anticipated by their respective fan bases, the ultimate heavyweight acting combo/pedigree of LIFE ON MARS' Philip Glenister and John Simm, HUSTLE’s resident Jack the Lad con man Marc Warren, and SURVIVORS prison break hero Max Beesley are brought together by their long time pal Alvo (played by Ben Chaplin), basically the lynch pin of the opening episode, for what turns out to be a series of unfortunately painful and bizarre events which will test their ties of loyalty and responsibilities towards each other, and as a group, to the limit, against a sun and sangria atmosphere contaminated with murder and deception. One thing’s for sure, life will never be the same again for any of them, in what looks set to be a production peppered with a strong sense of style and tone not seen since the likes of Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley’s gripping cult hit, SEXY BEAST, and which will surely prove to be a big winner this year for SKY ONE (and HD), whose marketing/production team must have been knocked off their seats when these actors decided to join forces with them to bring MAD DOGS to life, and making the company ever more keen to create further successful and lucrative home grown productions of this ilk to match the quality imports they’ve been buying from the US.

Can MAD DOGS live up to the pre-transmission hype and its prior stylish photo/advertising campaign-trailers directed by the outrageous and clever VANITY FAIR photographer David LaChapelle (teaser link: http://sky1.sky.com/Sky1-HD-Mad-Dogs-New-David-LaChapelle-Promo), and featuring a creepy Tony Blair face masked, gun wielding assassin? Let’s certainly hope so!

Look for a KOOL TV review of MAD DOGS, starting next Thursday on SKY ONE (and HD), soon...
